When the only tool you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail the saying goes. It goes without saying that hammering your way through the world this way isn’t the brightest of ideas. The results will leave much to whish for. A diverse, extended ‘toolkit’ of ideas, perspectives and visions is worth a great deal.
Knowing it all yourself and being the only source of wisdom block the use of such a toolkit. Fresh ideas and insights arise when and where least expected. One idea leads to another and so on. What doesn’t work for us may be the ultimate solution for somebody else. Fantasy for one is a practical solution for another. Being open to that fact and keep on sharing and asking works better for all of us.
This principle is not new, it’s applied by nature all around us and more and more in businesses of al kind. An example of this is the increasing use of open source software. We base our core approach and actions on this natural open source principle. Freely available ideas, insights, techniques and sources of inspiration help us to reach further, achieve more. Help us to grow, as a person, group, project, company and/or society.
That these ideas, insights etcetera are freely available doesn’t mean that nothing is secret or that anybody can take, use or even misuse whatever they want. No, openness comes, and goes with respect and trust from both sides. If this isn’t there we lock ourselves in our own smaller and smaller little worlds and go on excluding more and more to no one’s avail. Openness gets us further, a lot further. It makes us grow, flourish and besides that gets us just concrete practical results.
